Programs of Study

The Department of Social and Cultural Analysis (SCA) was founded in September 2005 through the combination of several pre-existent curricular programs (Africana Studies, American Studies, Asian/Pacific/American Studies [A/P/A], Gender and Sexuality Studies, Metropolitan Studies, Social and Cultural Analysis) and one newly-established program (Latino Studies). Recognizing the distinct but overlapping concerns of these various scholarly fields, the Department sponsors undergraduate- and graduate-level study both within and across the different program areas, pursuing a coordinated intellectual project that is greater than the sum of its parts.

The Department currently offers undergraduate majors and/or minors in all six program areas, as well as in Social and Cultural Analysis itself. At the graduate level, the Department administers Master of Arts degrees in Africana Studies and American Studies, and it is in the process of developing a doctorate in Social and Cultural Analysis, which will complement its internationally renowned American Studies Ph.D. program, already in place.
