Degree requirements for students who entered CAS prior to Fall 2006

Major Requirements (for students enrolled in CAS prior to Fall 2006)

The Metropolitan Studies major consists of ten courses (40 credits) and is structured sequentially, as outlined below.

Two introductory sequence courses should be taken in this order:

  • V18.0601 Interdisciplinary Perspectives on

  • Metropolitan Studies (formerly V99.0101, Introduction to Metropolitan Studies, equivalent to MAP V55.0631, Interdisciplinary Perspectives on Met Studies).

  • V18.0602 Cities in a Global Context (formerly V99.0103)

Five elective courses are required; one course from each of three areas, plus two courses from any of the three areas.

  • Area 1: Social Welfare & Public Policy: Economics, Poverty, Health, Education, Families, Law

  • Area 2: Urban Culture & Identity: Culture of the City and People of the City

  • Area 3: The Material City: The Built environment, Planning and Development

Three research core courses are required:

  • V18.0040 and V18.0042 Internship Fieldwork and Internship Seminar (related to Metropolitan Studies) 

  • V18.0651 Research Methods in Metropolitan Studies (substitutes for V99.0501)

  • V18.0090 Senior Research Seminar (substitutes for V99.0502)
