Questions about graduate-level study
What graduate degree programs are offered in the Department of Social and Cultural Analysis?
The Department of Social and Cultural Analysis offers Master of Arts degrees in Africana Studies and in American Studies, and a Ph.D. in American Studies. We are currently developing a Ph.D. in Social and Cultural Analysis that will complement the focus of our existing American Studies Ph.D. program.
How do I apply?
You can apply to the SCA graduate programs by going to the GSAS Admissions and Application website. There you can apply online, download the application, or request one to be mailed to you.
What are the minimum GRE scores needed to apply?
There are no minimum GRE scores needed to apply. As part of the admissions process we look at all aspects of the application, especially the personal statement.
Do all students accepted for graduate study receive funding?
All accepted doctoral candidates receive funding from the Graduate School of Arts and Science for terms of either four or five years. Each award entails both a fellowship and a teaching assistantship component. A very small number of funding packages are also available to students in the Africana Studies M.A. program. Funding is not currently available to students in the terminal M.A. program in American Studies.
When is the application deadline, and when will admissions decisions be made?
The application deadline for the American Studies Program is December 15; for the Africana Studies Program the application deadline is January 4. Applications are reviewed beginning in early January. Most decisions will be mailed out by early March. Admissions decisions will not be disclosed via telephone or email.
My GRE scores will likely arrive late because I'm taking the GRE exam a few days prior to the application deadline. Will my application still be considered if my GRE scores arrive after the official deadline?
Your application will receive full consideration so long as your official test scores arrive soon after the deadline. Please be sure that all other parts of your application are received at the Graduate School by stipulated date. It is also suggested that you also mail a copy of your paper test score report when you receive it since it may take a while for the official test scores to arrive at the Admissions office.
